It’s Not About The Money

Some people think that just because they have money and they’re paying me to do a job, they think they can treat me like shit. And when I have enough and refuse to work, they think I’m being an asshole.

I think there’s something seriously disturbing about the way working people are being treated in this country. True, most people use money as their motivation to work (which is the lowest point of motivation to do anything), but that doesn’t mean they can accept being treated badly by their employers or contractors.

It’s the fact that they accept to be conditioned that way that is the reason why mean employers can get away with it. The whole mindset of “I pay you therefore I own your ass” is somehow understandable and tolerable.

It’s not. Well at least I won’t accept it. Just because most people in Indonesia are obsessed with money and are even willing to die for a mere Rp.30,000.- doesn’t make me one of them.

No, it’s not about the money.

It’s about appreciation.

It’s about respecting the people who made you the contractor, or the employer, or the CEO of a sky-high building, or some giant empire, or whatever.

It’s about knowing that you used to be one of them (except for the case of those who’re born and fed with silver spoons), doing all the work and putting all the effort into creating the best work possible, one that makes you, on top of everyone else, proud of it.

I don’t know why some people find it so difficult to understand.

Maybe it’s a colonialism mentality leftover: I’m a master you’re my servant. I give you money you have to do what you’re told.

Sometimes it’s annoying to see my ex bosses kept nodding their heads and said yes to whatever their clients wanted. We were paid to be their consultant, we were supposed to advise them the best suggestion, not to say yes to unrealistic time line or budget.

Since you’re the contractor/get paid what to do, it doesn’t mean you have no right to terminate the contract, Ther. If one of the parties is not happy, either you could walk out with agreed conditions. No reason to continue working if you’re not happy and won’t deliver good result, right?

    Finally Woken’s last blog post..Speechless

Absolutely. People think just because they have the money, and that our job is not as important (yep, right, design graphics is all about putting a bunch of colors and fonts together, that’s all) as theirs, then they have the right to change concepts just as it was nearing the deadline and forced us to redo the whole thing from the start. And when we finally abide, they saw how much the previous concept was actually better, so they wanted to go back to the original one. And this went on and on so many times until we got sick of it.

In the end we had to take some extreme actions by telling them to make a final decision and stuck to it or they could go to a much cheaper, bodgier design job that lacked classiness and professionality.

    Sigh…

    mmuuaaaccchhhh…

I give you a BIG kiss Therry..

Working is not only for money, but it’s talking about apprecation.

About big salary or great bonus. it’s only about time, maybe next month, next year, they are coming and we should prepare our self becoming a successful lady (ciieehhh sok optimiss :P)

But the recognition from our boss by saying:

    ” Great Job Indah….”

Could make me smile while walking along in my way back home.
even this body “crying” for a massage cause working too hard.

That simple words ” Great Job Indah…”

It feels same as you get your salary doubled.

    :D

Indah, be thankful you have a boss who never forgets to appreciate your hard work. Most bosses I know are tight-asses when it comes to praises, even if it’s only a small appreciation like saying “Good job! Well done!”, they seem to think this will somewhat make them lose their charisma, and think that by doing that will reduce your motivation to work.

What they don’t realise is that too much saying of “Not good enough” and scornful looks which they supposedly think will motivate, only make us feel more like a slave and less like a human being. Or to be exact, a robot :)

  6. GJ Says:

Never ever let someone take you for granted!!!!

You are right appreciation is by far a better motivator than money.

Treating each and every human being with respect is something I do everyday, be it my staff at work or at home. I’m no better than them, we are all equal.
I have met the ones you are talking about.

    Smile girl!!!

    Ther,

Appreciation and sincere compliments from time to time for the employees would stimulate them to do their best more. It will attract them to set better achievements. So, it’s not always about the money.

    Lorraine’s last blog post..R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Exactly, and judging by the comments people give to this post, most people know that appreciation is important to keep the spirits up, I just wonder why most people feel reluctant to put it to practice though.

Really Woel? You would?? Wow I’m gonna have to make a list! LOL j/k ;)

  9. Devi Girsang Says:

Sadly in our culture, most people are willful for tip instead of compliment as a reward for their service. I do believe you’re not one of them :)

Nevertheless, I believe the premise that human life consists of a series of choices ergo we can always choose whether we want to be treated.

Which was why I decided to quit my last job and started working freelance :)

  10. Jennie S. Bev Says:

Totally agree with you girl. You go, girl, stand up whenever you are looked down by others. Only this way we can change the working culture.

    PS.
On some blogs, there are commenters who identify themselves as “Jen.” That’s not me, so now I use my full name whenever I give comments, which is a rare occasion from now on.

Hello Jenster! Long time no see, how’re things going with you? I’m hoping more and more employers will follow Larry Page’s steps and concepts on building a company that is actually comfortable to work in, instead of a prison-like environment most people end associating their companies with.

anyway, pengen banget baca2 tulisan yg lain, tapi kpala gue masih sakit nih, nanti kalo dah baikan gue mampir sini lagi ya say…

Kasian banget temen lo Sil, hidup berkecukupan tapi tidak bahagia :( lo kenapa? vertigo lagi? makanya jangan suka muter2 keq gasing… laki gue kemaren begitu, muter2 sambil ngajakin anjing gue muter2, dia ga tahan trus abis itu pusing en muntah2.. LOLL

  14. Diny Says:

“Can I see the contract again where it states that you could treat me like shit?” asked Therry to her employer. “You paid me for my talent. From now on, you do this yourself and see if you could get it done right. This girl is walking outta here. Have a nice day, beyotch!”
As she finished her last sentence, she put her left hand up in the air facing the palm to her [ex] employer. You know, that ‘black girl sassy thing’ move.
[Door slammed]Therry’s boss saw her flipped her middle finger as she walked away.

    Diny’s last blog post..Weird Injuries

LOL. Oh, I do wish that I’ve adopted that attitude when the time comes for it (again). But for a girl to do the whole hand up in the air thing, I think she must require some nice lookin’ booties to go with it. Nice lookin’ booties to watch as the employer is stunned and can only see the back of my body walking away, booty swayin right and left…. mmmhmmmmm….

  15. Rob Says:

It is interesting that people think it is about the money.

I am currently taking a blast from a rather large organization because they want me to send them the results via email but my email address is blocked as spam :D

It is like we are paying you good money. My response is you have promised to pay me good money but I have not seen any of it yet.

I have never had money. I have always worked on things that I like to do. Unfortunately, those things have not made me rich.

I have no doubt that you will deal with this one as you feel you need to :D

No one has ever offered to pay me enough to take any shit from them. It is all about common courtesy as I see it. You’re paying me, you do not own me! We can talk about it as adults or you can kiss my hairy ass as I walk out the door.

    But that’s just me.

Your attitude is juuuuuuuuuust right! Just recently I was working on something voluntarily and the person who I was doing the favour for didn’t even appreciate the work and made a huge fuss over some minor mistakes (which happened because he didn’t provide the right details in the first place). Thing is he was sort of related because if he wasn’t I’d be so damn ready to give him the finger!
